| Backup and Data Recovery Guide |
| |
| Use this to backup and restore data and application files.
(ProServe II or PLUS) |
| |
|
1st, let us review the EasyMenu 3.00
software product. It is a runtime and prerequisite for all software products
that we develop and distribute. This product installs and runs all of our custom business
software applications. After installing this product, you then install the
software application that is shipped or downloaded with this package from
within EasyMenu 3.00. |
| |
| EasyMenu 3.00 installs in a folder called
EasyBee on your local drive C: |
| |
| During the Setup program within EasyMenu 3.00
you either selected the default path or may have modified that path folder
during Server Installation. The default path is (C:\EasyBee\ProServe)
If you selected this default path then the folder ProServe under
folder EasyBee is where ProServe II is installed. This folder (ProServe)
is what's important not EasyBee. The EasyBee folder can be recovered using
the CD. Please see note below. |
| Note: It's okay to backup the folder EasyBee
if you like. BUT you would not want to do a complete restore of the EasyBee
folder because doing so may cause problems. BUT, there are some files that
may be restored selectively back to the EasyBee folder. All ReportEASY and
ExportEASY Catalog files are stored in the EasyBee folder. |
| |
| If during Server Installation you changed the default
path, then that folder is where ProServe II is installed and should be
backup. |
| |
| Backup/Restore Utility within ProServe II. |
| We developed this for those who may not have Tape drives,
Zip drives, CD Burners or any other removable media to use for backups. If
you have one of these removable drives we strongly recommend that you use it
to backup the ProServe folder outside this Utility. Again the best
backup is backing up the folder called ProServe or (what ever you may
have changed it to) using software other than this Backup/Restore Utility.
If you use this utility for backups please see more
information at the bottom of this page.. |
| Example: You have a CD Burner.. Use the software
that came with that burner to copy the folder ProServe to a CD. If
you have a Tape Drive, include the ProServe folder in your backup.
|
| Note: always verify your backups. |
| |
| Restoring: |
- Install EasyMenu from the ProServe II CD (assuming
you're restoring to a fresh OS installation or a new computer) IF
not; start at step 5.
- Start EasyMenu
- Start Setup and follow system prompts.
- Select Server Type Installation and follow system prompts to
complete installation.
|
| If Backup is from outside ProServe II, tape drive, zip
drive or CD burner etc... |
- Exit EasyMenu
- Restore the contents of the folder called ProServe of
your backup media to the ProServe folder on your hard drive. Making
sure not to copy the folder ProServe into the ProServe folder of
drive C:
|
| If Backup is from ProServe II's Backup/Restore Utility. |
- Start EasyMenu
- Run ProServe II
- At Company Menu Load Add/Delete Company
- Add you're Company using the Same Company Number as before.
- Load the New Company that you just added.
- Select Utility/Backup/Restore Utility from main pull-down menu.
- Run Setup and setup the defaults for this company.
- Run Restore and follow prompts to restore this company
- Exit ProServe and run Clear Network Flags

| Backup/Restore Utility Notes: |
| This utility was developed for those who do not have any
other means for backup other than floppy drive or zip drives. It uses an old
MS-DOS Zip program know as PKZIP / PKUNZIP it's the DOS version of WinZip.
For the most part it works great and I use it all the time. With the latest
OS and ant-virus programs it's getting harder to use this zip program. The
reason is anti-virus protection programs and some new XP protection features
thinks this old DOS program is a virus and want allow it to run. The problem
is unless you know what to look for during the backup procedure you can't
tell if it actually worked or not. Below are a few things to look for to
insure a proper backup. |
| How to Verify Backups: |
| 1st, lets look at how the backup works. It first copies the files to be
backup to a Transfer folder under the ProServe folder to make ready to be
Zipped down using PKZIP.EXE, then the PKZIP.EXE is called to Zip these
files, it then copies that Zipped file to the backup media your using. |
- You should see files being copied to the Transfer folder. (Setting up
files to backup)
- After that you should see a Black screen displaying each file being
imploded by the PKZIP program. This should not go by so fast that you
can't see this happening. If so you may not be getting a good backup.
- After that you will be prompt to Backup or Skip the Zipped file.
- Open your Windows Explorer and view the media used for this backup.
- Make note of the file size of your DBF backup file.
- Compare it to the last backup the day before.
- If it stays the same (you may not be getting a good backup)
